Euro Cup 2020
Critical Thinking
A. "Every match is a new opportunity. Put its failure behind and start over again."
Does this apply to the Italian football team when we analyse their performance
from their failure to qualify for the World Cup Football to their victory in the
European Championship in these four years?
Back in 2018, Italy plunged to the lowest moment of its soccer history by failing to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in six decades. It was shocking for Italy – a four-time World Champion – to not qualify for the one tournament that has bound their country’s legacy as one of the elites in world football. Now, they are the best team in Europe and on a national-record 34-match unbeaten run under Roberto Mancini, their suave coach who has won an international trophy in his first attempt to add to the country’s other European title in 1968.
Despite the failure at the 2018 world cup, Italy did not lose hope. Rather they started to focus on improving and enhancing players and managing the team. Roberto Mancini, took his step forward when he picked youths, energetic soccer players and started to build them for the national team. Italy’s transformation under Mancini in the last three years has been extraordinary. And they were made to fight all the way against Spain, taking the lead through Federico Chiesa’s brilliant goal but being pegged back as Alvaro Morata’s equaliser made it 1-1 and forced extra time before the Azzurri prevailed 4-2 on penalties. The players wanted to play a brand of football that people enjoyed and thus far they have managed to do exactly that.
The Italian team were more focused on defensive football. Mancini used to say ’I love to win with 1-0 ’. The belief of the coach and the encouragement he gave to his players help Italy to stand out and lift the trophy of Euro Cup 2021.
Failure is an approach to learn, where Italy learnt their mistake of weak team management and player development. They progressively brought changes on their team ensuring every player in their team give their best on the field.
B. When a team plays in home ground, it gets huge support from the audience in the stadium. Does this support help them to win the match or the players may feel pressure to win and thus lose? What do you think?
For a team, audiences aid the players on the ground subconsciously. The crowd cheering the players and their team helps players engaged and motivated. Audience reactions to the game are mesmerizing. The scenery completely changes when a player scores a goal.
On the home ground, the home team has most of its audiences in the stadium cheering for them. But the research says there is 50% chance for both the team to win the match. In the entire game, players concentration should be on ball. Players never know when and where the ball will come to them. It’s really necessary for each player on the ground to know player positions. Coaches, Captains are always giving hints to the player to pass the ball. In short, players are fully focused on the team and the game.
Even though the home ground has the majority of the audience to cheer the home team, it doesn’t impact much on the gameplay.

He'd go to his brother’s caravan at the seaside instead. A young woman wanted to go clubbing in Ibiza as she'd heard it was a lot of fun.
B. Write a news story based on the given information.
Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 to win Copa America Argentina won their first major title in 28 years and Lionel Messi finally won his first medal in a blue-and-white shirt when an Angel Di Maria goal gave them a 1-0 win over Brazil and a record-equalling 15th Copa America. Di Maria, starting for just the second time in the Copa, justified his selection by scoring the opener midway through the first half. Brazil piled on the pressure in an exciting second half but even with five strikers on the field, they could not get an equaliser against an Argentine defence protected by the outstanding Rodrigo De Paul. In the second half, Brazil fired their aggressive attack but the defence of Argentina became their obstacle. Argentina was playing defensively and tending to lift the trophy.
